Welcome to Climate DataLab!

Climate DataLab is a home for people of all backgrounds to further their climate modeling knowledge!

The mission of this site is to provide an ‘end-to-end’ resource for education and training in the use of datasets generated by climate models. We aim to complement existing resources, but to fill in some common knowledge gaps which tend to exist in common online training materials, and to be particularly difficult for novice learners to overcome on their own.

In these pages, you will find material on topics including:

  • Climate model fundamentals (what are these things anyway?)
  • Data formats, naming conventions, and metadata
  • Model versions, emissions scenarios, and “MIPs”
  • Basic visualizations and data reduction techniques
  • And much more!

Code examples are provided for each of these topics, which you can also find in our Github repository (see below) if you would like to follow along or contribute there.

How Should I Use This Site?

Explore as you like, of course, but we have some suggested places to start for different types of user groups.

If you are…

  • Brand new to climate modeling:
check out the “Getting Started” page for a brief orientation to topics you’ll need to understand!
  • Trying to get more familiar with analyzing climate model output:
check out our background explainers in the navigation bar above, then visit the Tutorials section for inspiration!
  • Looking for more advanced examples of climate data analysis:
browse the Tutorials section to see some more detailed analyses using various sources of model output!
There are also some external pages in the Resources section that have good materials for more advanced users.

Please also feel free to contact us if there are topics you find confusing, or that you would like to see included in future versions of these materials.

Code examples are provided for each of these topics, which you can also find in our Github Repository if you would like to follow along or contribute there

Our Github

We have a Github repository associated with this site, which contains numerous tutorials with code available. These will allow you to follow along with our pages, and for our more advanced coding users provide a starting point to build on additional analyses. Explore our github repo, which we are continuously working on and improving !
